Roadworks, before you reach them

Motocamp NZ, 5 November 2026

Kia ora,

Stop/go roadworks can add a real wait to a trip. Motocamp now tells you about them when you plan, and again on the road, on state highways right across New Zealand.

1Roadworks on your plan

When you plan a trip, Motocamp checks the state highways it'll take you on for roadworks that hold traffic up. If it finds any, your trip summary says so in one line, with the highway and about how long to allow. Tap it to read NZTA's own notice, like stop/go traffic with a 30 km/h limit. It only counts works on roads you'll actually drive, so a job on a road you cross stays out of it. Pick a date for your trip and it checks the works for that day.

2A heads up on the road

In navigation, you'll hear about each stretch of roadworks once, about a minute and a half before you get there. At 100 km/h that's around 2.5 km out, and never closer than 1.5 km. A short note shows on screen at the same time, just under your next turn. If one job runs for kilometres, you get one heads up for the whole stretch, not one at every side road. That leaves time to settle in for the wait or take another road.

3Which roadworks count

Motocamp goes by NZTA's own grading. Works NZTA says will cause delays, usually stop/go or temporary lights, get a heads up. Works NZTA marks as take care still show on the map, but stay quiet. On the Tauranga to Katikati trip in the picture, NZTA lists four works on the road, and one of them holds you up. This covers state highways, which is what NZTA publishes, so council roadworks on local roads aren't included. Set working hours aren't read yet, so check the notice if you're heading out at night.

Getting the update

The app updates itself. Close Motocamp fully, open it again with a signal before you head out, and give the map a few seconds. The new version loads on a fresh open, never partway through a trip.

If a heads up doesn't match what you find on the road, send the highway and the place to support@motocamp.org and I'll check it.
